Open Question: How much motor oil do I need to refill this lawn mower? I am fully changing the old motor oil in my CRAFTSMAN Rotary Lawn mower.
This 625-series, Briggs & Stratton motor turns a 22 inch blade to a side-discharge.
I need to know how much (I am using 30 weight) motor oil I need to buy to fully refill this motor after I drain it.
Thanks for knowledgeable replies.
Open Question: What's the best lawn mower to use? A hover mower or a wheel mower? I had a hover mower for many years and I never had any trouble with it. Even if the grass was quite high it always did the job for me.
Unfortunately the starting handle broke and I had to buy a new mower. I decided to buy a wheel mower but it doesn't seem to work half as well as the hover. The grass is continually getting stuck in the blades causing the mower to stop working which means that every minute I have to stop and pull the grass from the blades.
Does anybody know how I can stop this from happening.
Do you think hover mowers are better?
Thank you for answering.
Chris: I hadn't thought of that. Good idea.

Open Question: Hello, I have a snapper lawn mower that i borrowed from my fater in law. The model number is 30085S? serial num is 63102397. Could someone please tell me what these numbers mean? Also I downloaded the manual all 108 pages but i am looking to figure out what a part is. This is what happened . I was mowing just fine on this old mower and i was told DO NOT TAKE YOUR FOOT OF THIS BAR!!! which app holds the blades down so they will run. So then i was going across gravel and did not want to tear it up so I let go of that bar ooops! well then after that I tried to by the directions get it back to wear it would cut and it wouldn't it would hold into place but it was not cutting the grass. Then i turned it off and looked under it and i found a metal ring that is bent all up and broken under there which i am assuming must help to hold blades or at least help to turn them. I wish i could post a picture of it but i cant on yahoo. Any idea what this might be? please help me It is about 4 1/2 inches in diameter and it has a hole cut out of the center. but it is all bent and cracked i guess from the blades.
Open Question: Getting to the blades on riding mower - Help? I am new to owning a riding mower and not the "most" mechanically inclined person so please bear with me on this question - I have an MTD riding mower (front engine, 14.5hp) - on the deck it says "triple cut" but all I can really see is 2 circular areas for blades under the deck (not positive if it has 2 or 3 blades) I bought the tractor used so no owners guide or anything. It is about a 2001 model I believe, in very good shape. My question - how do I get to the blades to remove for sharpening? The tractor of course is very heavy and I don't think I could tilt it on its rear end - the deck having atleast the 2 blades under it is pretty wide and sticks out far on each side, so I don't see how I could tilt it sideways either as it would be pivoting all the tractor weight on the deck metal. Is the some trick to getting access under these types of lawn tractors? Maybe putting it up on ramps or something? Also is that the way to sharpen the blades - to remove them first ?
Voting Question: Make a 14hp Murray lawn mower faster.? I recently became obsessed with lawn mower racing, i have an old 14hp Murray riding mower and i want to make it into a little project by making it faster, i'm going to take the blade deck off and all that etc. to make it a bit of a racing mower, not really fast because i dont want to spend much at all, i saw some videos on youtube that people just took the blade deck off and added smaller sprockets etc. but other than that u can keep it stock and taking off some parts to make it go faster, does anyone have any advice on whats a good idea to do so or have any instructional videos on how to do that? thank you so much :P
Resolved Question: Bent lawn mower blade? Hello, I am 15 years old and I mow my lawn every weekend. In our backyard, my dad just recently removed a bush, but left a few stumps there. I was mowing my lawn today and I was maneuvering around the stumps but the edge of the lawn mover clipped the edge of one of the stumps.
When it clipped the stump, the lawn mower was making this very very very loud clinking noise which sounded like it was coming from the blade. So i quickly stopped the engine and turned it back o just ot discover the same thing was happening but this time with white smoke coming out of the air filter.
Smoke was originally coming out of the filter before so that really didn't catch my attention. What did though was the clinking noise. I flipped over the lawn mower to see if the blade was bent and it appears that it is. It is slicing the front right corner of the blade cover.
I haven't told my dad yebecausese he didn't come home from work yet. However, I told my mom and she flipped sh*t on me. I have a TORO key start lawn mower and it is about 2-3 years old. The blade is 22" long fyi.
Do I need to replace the blade with a new one?
Help?
Voting Question: Making my own lawn mower blades? My riding mower has 3 blades. They are about $25 each. It's going to be time for new blades soon.
Is it possible to make my own blades from some flat stock iron? I have some 1/8" x 1.5" flat stock, which is about the same dimensions as the original blades.
Do I just need to heat temper the iron to make it harder? I thought about placing the end of the fabricated blade in a fire (charcoal grill, propane torch, or MAPP gas torch) until it's red hot then quenching it in some motor oil that is 300-400 degrees.
Would this work?
Resolved Question: Grass hasn't been growing for the past 3 weeks? Hello.
3 weeks ago I bought a new lawn mower. I didn't adjust the cutting blade height beforehand so the grass was cut to the shortest possible height.
Since then the grass has hardly grown at all which is strange considering it's the summer and we've had lots of sunshine and rain at times as well.
Does anybody know what the matter might be? Have I damaged the grass by cutting it too short?
Thank you for your answers.
Resolved Question: We need help with a lawn mower racing slogan for local community days.? We need help with a lawn mower racing slogan for local community days.?
Got any fun ideas for a slogan for Lawn Mower Racing? Our small community is putting on these races during our community days in July. We are trying to find a fun and catchy slogan for advertising purposes. These machines are not the typical lawn mower. Some may look like a mower but all mowers have their blades removed. Mower speeds range from 0 to 40 mph!! They race in the dirt and grass!! One community’s slogan was “Pass in the Grass”. We don't want to copy but maybe something similar. Got any ideas? Send em our way
Resolved Question: Lawn Mower Sputters and blows white smoke? My lawn Mower is not staying started. I used it twice at the begining of this year and now its not staying started. I have had trouble starting it, It runs for two seconds and shuts off, also white smoke comes out of the side as well when I try and start it. I have tried cleaning around the engine and under the blade, also replaced the old spark plug which had a good amount of oil on it. And i am still getting the same problem where it runs for 3 seconds and shuts off. It also wont crank unless I use the primer button each time.
Resolved Question: HELP with riding mower? Hit the mower deck, not the blade, with a root and since the mower does not start. We have replaced the selenoid, battery, ignition key switch and spark plug. Last time we got it to start took battery cables to battery on lawn mower and connected the red line to the starter and it started. Now, when I do it, the screen on top of the engine is spinning but the lawn mower is not firing or starting.
Is there something else I need to check?
Resolved Question: Lawn Mower quit last year? While I was mowing.
No obvious reason, it just stopped. Almost as if it was out of gas or something although it didnt sput out or anything.
I knew it was a problem when after it quit, I couldnt get it started right back. And the mower would ALWAYS crank right up when it was hot. (Took some pulling when cold)
Anyway, its an old brigs & stratton.
What could it be ?
Is it worth spending to get it fixed ?
I changed the blade and filter about 2 years ago.
I think its a yardman 21 inch 5 hp.

Resolved Question: animal cruelty displayed by husband, but he thinks it was not a big deal? My daughter has a pit bull dog. My husband started the lawn mower weeks ago and the dog freaked out due to the noise. He acts the same way with the vacuum cleaner and bites and barks ferociously at it. That day my husband kicked the dog and knocked his wind out and he laid down for a while. The most recent incident was more difficult to handle for me. My husband was there again at his property mowing the lawn and the dog was out in the yard using the bathroom. My husband says the dog circled him a few times and then attacked him. He attempted to hit the dog with the blade of the mower to save himself, however I honestly feel that he misread the problem completely. The dog is very calm and has never attacked anyone. He plays with my 2 year old niece quite often and no display of aggression has been seen witnessed by anyone except for my husband. I feel the problem is his not the dogs. He is calling animal control and wants to have the dog taken away and put up for adoption. This is putting a wedge in our relationship between my husband and my daughter not to mention the dog that call my grandson. I am hopeful that animal control will recognize the truth of the problem and allow the dog to stay. I asked to see bite marks and of course there are not any. No contact was made by the dog. He was only biting at the big red noisy machine on the ground. Does anyone think that this behavior is abnormal? I feel that the way people treat animals says a great deal about their character and this totally upsets me.
I left out a very important detail. My daughter has made arrangements to move tomorrow. The dog belongs to her and her boyfriend. My husband and I live in a different location than this happened.
I did speak with my husband about my concerns. He refused to believe I would be upset about this. We talked a great deal however he still feels he did the right thing and I totally dissagree.
I really appreciate everyone responding to my question. They were all worthy of reading and it was interesting to see so many opinions. I look forward to selecting a best answer.
